Erkan Saka is Professor of media and journalism studies at the School of Communication at Istanbul Bilgi University.
His current research topics include the social life of disinformation, critical algorithm and AI studies, citizen journalism and social movements, digital web archiving and internet histories, and metaverse and diversity. He is a longtime political blogger and a coordinator of a local TV show on social media. He recently directed an AI Literacy project funded by Google Türkiye. Among his recent works is Social Media and Politics in Turkey. A Journey through Citizen Journalism, Political Trolling, and Fake News (Lexington Books, 2019) and “Big data and gender-biased algorithms” in The International Encyclopedia of Gender, Media, and Communication (New York: Wiley Blackwell). After receiving his PhD from Rice University (Houston, USA), he was a research scholar in Anthropology, UC Irvine (Fall 2018), and in Science and Technology Studies, MIT.
At the invitation of Prof Dr Sahana Udupa (Ethnology, LMU), he is a Visiting Fellow at CAS and part of the CAS Research Group Below the Radar? Messaging Apps, Encryption and the Enticement of Extreme Speech.
